Food Review: 7-11 (New!) Maple Pancake Sausage Roller

If anything proves that in my soul resides a fat kid, it is 7-11’s Maple Pancake Sausage Roller. The posters advertising this new item went up last week and this was my reaction. Every day since my first sighting of its beautiful visage, I have stopped to examine the hot rollers for its debut, body tense with lustful anticipation. This morning, I finally had the opportunity to consummate my concupiscence for this comestible.
It was everything I dreamt it would be.
As I opened the paper package, a strong whiff of maple syrup rose up to meet me. This delightful odor emanated from reserves of syrup dotting the cornmeal crust, which crust encased a fatty, salty breakfast sausage link. While the crust is a bit dry, as cornmeal-based items are wont to be, the sausage counterbalances this nicely. The maple is present, but as more of a background element, against the expectation of its intense smell. It satisfied my early morning cravings for sweet, salty, fatty & meaty flavors all at once; though a similar product is oft Stewart mock’d, this is a seriously tasty item.
All of this deliciousness comes at a hefty price in terms of nutrition. Each roller is 270 calories/19 g of fat plus a not inconsequential amount of cholesterol and sodium. It does, however, provide 9 g of protein and 1 g of fiber. If you were expecting a sausage wrapped in a pancake and then injected with syrup to be healthy, you were mistaken.
The price is much less daunting when measured in currency, the traditional manner, since each Maple Pancake Sausage Roller is a mere $1. One dollar! At that price, you can’t afford not to try this out! (Unless you have less than a dollar, in which case I understand.) Definitely check this out.
